URC Ventures solves large-scale industry challenges through the real time digitisation of the physical world. The innovation was born out of URC Ventures’ work with the large enterprise construction materials industry around the world since 2012, with their inventory management platform and patented measurement technology. The measurement results are accessible quickly, for a small fraction of the typical cost and well before the time it would take a measurement crew to even show up. It allows professionals to measure piled material themselves by simply pointing an iPhone at the material and walking around it. However, innovative technology has delivered a game changing solution for the wider aggregate industry.Īny stockpile can now be quantified by using the new Stockpile Reports Lite iPhone app. Traditional surveying and measurement teams, which can take time and cost to secure and transport to site, use techniques such as drilling into stockpiles and LiDAR laser measurement equipment to gauge the volume of material. Measuring stockpiles of material before moving them has traditionally taken considerable time, money and effort. A full audit trail of adjustments is recorded as part of the overall solution.Innovative technology is enabling professionals on site to measure stockpiles more quickly and easily than ever, saving significant time and costs, explains URC Ventures CEO David Boardman. “We considered every scenario to ensure we came up with consistent rules to define stockpile events.” The solution is flexible, however, and includes audited stock adjustment capability should integrated systems fail or go offline for maintenance. “We consulted extensively with Grindrod to fine-tune the rules governing stockpile measurement,” explains senior consultant at Keyrus, Craig Andrew. Tableau’s powerful drill- down capabilities allow users to view this information at extreme levels of detail. The result? Accurate stockpile reporting that gives a simple view of what comes into-and goes out of-every stockpile. The solution precisely tracks the commodities in every wagon on every train that enters and leaves the terminals, as well as in every vessel hold loaded. This is integrated and consolidated in a customised, centralised cloud-based solution to deliver timely stockpile reports. “There was always therefore some delay in feedback to clients about their current stockpile levels.”ĭata is now obtained from the different systems at the exact time the commodity enters the terminal. ![]() ![]() “The consolidation of this data from various sources was time-consuming and prone to human error,” explains Bronwyn Burdis, Data and Analytics Manager at Grindrod’s Terminal business. ![]() This information was supplemented by calculations based on physical measurement of various parameters. These figures were used to work out what was left in the stockpiles. In the past, data was manually extracted from various third-party systems that tracked operations in the terminals and recorded in various Excel spreadsheets. The stockpiles must be monitored so that Grindrod can report tonnages to its clients. The commodities handled by Grindrod enter the terminals by rail or road and are stockpiled before being loaded onto vessels for export. This, however, is arguably the most difficult metric within its operation to track with total accuracy. Grindrod Terminals needed reliable measurements of each of the stockpiles held within its Richards Bay and Maputo terminals.
